Own Your Health: What’s on Your Plate?!

I have been asked quite often, “Coach, what do you eat in a day?” People, let me just make this clear – I LOVE FOOD….no comment from my friends who’ve seen me ‘chow down’ 🤪

I do not follow a strict diet, meaning I am neither, vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian or whatever other ‘rian’ there might be. I love red meat just as much as I love vegetables. I NEVER cut carbs and I have my fair share of fats – good fats, that is. I am not big on sweets although I do have a few favorite desserts – cheesecake, lemon squares, vanilla ice cream, good chocolate ice cream, cherry pie.

For me, MODERATION is ‘key’ and I exercise 4 to 5 days each week.

Although there might be occasion when I consume more than I should, I don’t stress. Yes – I am human 😉 You could say then that exercise is my ‘saving grace’ and genetics plays a big role too. Over indulgence once can be forgiven….over indulgence over time, weell, that is a different story.

My friend and nutritionist Frannie Mahfood always says “Own Your Health…What’s On Your Plate?

Growing up, dinner always included vegetable salad, steamed or roasted vegetables….and we dared not excuse ourselves from dinner (me and my siblings) until we had our fair share of vegetables. We were taught back then, to love fruit too. To this day, I have my 3 servings of fruit and loads of vegetables every day. Bless up to my parents!! They did something right!! 😝

I love a good salad….um no – salad does not mean just lettuce and cucumber. Come on people, get creative, there are lots of different ways to eat vegetables and there is a wide variety to choose from. No excuses!

Cut the junk and nourish your bodies with healthy, wholesome foods. Arguably, going vegan is thought to be the best dietary plan because of its many health benefits ie. better weight management, reduced ‘bad’ cholesterol, reduced risk of heart disease, reduced risk of diabetes, to name a few.

By simply being mindful of what you eat and consuming balanced meals, you can achieve similar, if not the same rewards. A well balanced meal contains the three macronutrients – protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats (sparingly) and a huge serving of vegetables. Nutrients from one food group helps with the absorption of nutrients from another. Water is of equal importance in the absorption of nutrients too…take care of your health and drink up.

Work out… Eat Well… Be Patient… Your body will reward you.

Get creative, put some thought into meal prep – make your meals tasty and “appealing to the eye” ….no-one wants to eat something that looks like last week’s left-overs. Cooking is only a chore if you make it a chore.

So there really is no set schedule or limit to what I consume on a daily basis. The bottom line is I enjoy what I eat, I lift heavy and I work hard.
